Microgrids in the US are evolving as experts forecast an increase in those fueled by clean power resources, positioning them to play key roles in the clean energy transition by reducing emissions, boosting resiliency, and balancing clean and fossil generation sources, according to a recent report. A microgrid is a local energy grid capable of operating autonomously even when disconnected from the traditional grid. Microgrids have been primarily pursued as energy resilience solutions, according to the report from the National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners and the National Association of State Energy Officials. The report examines the costs, capabilities and benefits of microgrids as well as the challenges to their development.
