Few studies have reported on the rheological properties of a Portland-sulphoaluminate cement (PO-SAC) composite slurry and even few have investigated the effects of polycarboxylate superplasticisers (PCEs) on the rheological properties of a PO-SAC composite slurry. In this study, the effects of a PCE on the flow pattern and rheological parameters of a PO-SAC cement composite slurry are studied. Results show that the addition of a PCE changes the flow pattern of the slurry. The PCE content is directly proportional to the rheological index of the slurry and inversely proportional to the consistency coefficient. The shear stress decreases with the addition of a PCE. This is because the PCE electrostatically repulses, lubricates and sterically hinders cement particles. These three actions reduce the shear resistance and viscosity of the system macroscopically.
