摘要

In New Zealand, Maori (the indigenous people) are disproportionately involved in motor vehicle traffic crashes (MVTC). In 2006, the age-standardised MVTC death rate for Maori was 20 per 100 000 population compared to nine for non-Maori, with rangatahi (Maori aged 15-24 years) being the age group most affected. Some potential reasons for this were explored in a sub-study of the New Zealand Drivers Study (NZDS) which follows a cohort of 3,992 newly licensed car drivers, recruited face to face between February 2006 and January 2008 throughout New Zealand. To encourage Maori participation, Maori community/iwi (tribe) organisations were subcontracted to recruit study participants in their region. This included organisations from Napier/Hastings, Wairoa, Gisborne, Ruatoria, Manukau and Mangere in South Auckland, and Dunedin.
