This outstanding contribution integrates scholarship across many fields to address an obvious question: how did the Dutch rebels create the most dynamic state in western Europe while waging a war of independence against the Spanish empire, the military colossus of the age, and what role did war play in that process? It launches a six-volume series, building on the research programme of the Netherlands Institute of Military History, part of the National Defence Academy, and one that promises to transform the concept of military history, with the sea at its centre.
