摘要

Screenings (comprised of grass, leaves, partially decomposed organics, pebbles and dirt, pieces of glass, and other inerts) from the Chicago municipal solid waste sorting line, Illinois, USA, are being used in the treatment of contaminated soil. TheCID Metropolitan RDF Complex in the Chicago metropolitan area treats contaminated soil ex situ, incorporating screenings from the sorting facility (~35-60% organic matter on average) at a ratio of contaminated soil:trommel fines of~2:1. The use of trommel in the composting process led to a marked decrease in BETX (benzene/ethyl/toluene/xylene) concentration in petroleum contaminated soil. Similar tests are being performed on the treatment of other contaminants, including TNT, DNT, RDX, herbicides, pesticides and chlorinated organic compounds. Trommel fines are also being tested for suitability for use as a soil amendment.
