Wholesale electricity prices on the Japan Electric Power Exchange (Jepx) extended gains in the past week, as persistent warm and humid weather in western Japan sustained electricity demand for cooling purposes. Jepx's system-wide, day-ahead prices rose by 3.8pc from a week earlier to an average of ¥8.64/kWh ($81.89/ MWh) from 28 August-3 September. Prices in the six western areas, where the grid runs at 60 hertz (Hz), gained 9.2pc to average ¥8.81/kWh, which outstripped a 3.2pc decline in the three eastern areas that run at 50 Hz to ¥8.57/kWh.
