Organics play role in salmon recovery in Pacific Northwest.

A report is presented on the involvement of the organic recycling industry in the 'Soils for Salmon' project in the Pacific Northwest, USA. Salmon are indicators of ecosystem health and the effects of tougher regulations imposed on the area due to the regions salmon (Puget Sound bull trout) being listed as threatened species under the endangered species act will be felt by the whole region. The regulations concentrate on the restoration, protection and conservation of the invaluable land and waterresources for salmon. The 'Soils for Salmon' project was developed to lend assistance to the overall salmon recovery effort by encouraging the retention of native soils and/or the additions of organic amendments into new construction in order to supportspecies recovery. Traditional construction practice often results in the removal of several feet of native soil and after completion of the construction sod is typically placed on glacial till, fundamentally altering the soil profile and resulting in detrimental impacts on surface water runoff and salmon habitat degradation. The retention of native soils and/or addition of organics would maintain soil quality and reduce potential water pollution. Other best management practices to support salmon recovery are also discussed, for example, the use of soil in stormwater management.
