The following account of the fortunes of the Braunton trading ketch Agnes in the brutal winter of 1947 complements the overview, published in The Mariner’s Mirror, of how the Bristol Channel coastwise trade worked through the 15 years that followed the end of the second world war.1 It was compiled by the then mate of the vessel, Bill Mitchell, 50 years after his experience. Agnes, with only a 35 hp motor, was a true auxiliary-engined sailing vessel. Mr Mitchell, aged 93, is still living in Braunton. He has approved publication of his record.
