Ejection seat technology is a vital component of combat aircraft, allowing the pilots to safely leave the aircraft in the event of likely destruction. It does this by propelling the pilot out of the aircraft at arapid speed. This can differ depending on the speed and altitude of the aircraft and the type of ejection seat used, but a pilot can be ejected away from the aircraft at distances of some 200-300ft.When the pilot pulls the ejection handle the ejection system is activated and automatically removes all connections that the seat has to the aircraft before the entire seat is essentially blasted out of the cockpit using explosive charges and an underseat rocket motor. The aircraft canopy can either be jettisoned with charges to allow the seat to leave, or the canopy can be penetrated using canopy breaker spikes on the top of the seat to allow it to pass through.
