Holborn House is a new Central London community building with a 100-year history. An old basement gymnasium, once buried within the city block is transformed.Working closely with the neighborhood run charity,it has been reconfigured, relined and extended up into aluminous new 2-storey,street-facing building with an integral public artwork by artist Caragh Thuring. The new building brings visibility and presence within the neighborhood to Holborn Community Association(HCA)and by extension reflects the importance of the community to this historic and commercially dense urban borough. The old concrete infrastructure of basement and ground slab, soffit, and columns was retained, and the new design built in and onto them. The new building is low energy with ASHP(air source heat pump)system, passive ventilation, and fully accessible.A new filigree structure of steel roof trusses leads the eye from entrance to the sunlit interior of the block, where new lanterns over the double height gym introduce sky views.
