摘要

As we wind along hairpin bends below the 5,328-metre pass at Taglang La in the northern Indian region of Ladakh, the floodplain finally comes into view. My colleague Tashi has been driving and now slows down, perks up and reaches for his binoculars. "Look, there they are!" he says. We enter the Tso Kar valley to the trumpeting calls of a pair of the birds we've come to see—the rare and globally threatened Black-necked Crane, wing-stretching and bowing to each other in the shallows.
