It is most unlikely that when the founders of First Quantum Minerals Ltd (FQM) put the company together in 1996 they could have foreseen that within 18 years it would have become the multi-billion dollar organisation it is today. What began as a tailings retreatment project at Bwana Mkubwa on Zambia's Cop-perbelt, producing an initial 10,000 tpa copper, is now a mid- to upper-tier explorer, developer and producer of copper and nickel assets in Africa, Europe, Australia and South America.
