A group of climate-focused nongovernment organizations (NGOs) is seeking to end the EU's support for up to 30 natural gas infrastructure projects at a time when Europe is seeking alternatives to pipeline gas imports from Russia. Friends of the Earth Europe-one of the NGOs involved-said this week that the EU has given these "climate-destructive [gas] projects VIP status, in contradiction of its legal obligations. " The projects targeted by Friends of the Earth, ClientEarth and others have all been designated as projects of common interest (PCI) by the EU, which makes them eligible for funding from the 27-nation bloc.
