In January and February this year, the occurrence of a severe heatwave (National Climate Centre 2009) effectively set up an extensive natural experiment whereby vineyards in many different winegrowing regions were exposed to both varying intensity andduration of extreme heat. An assessment of vineyard responses and impact was undertaken by interviewing managers of properties from selected winegrowing regions within the affected areas - Mornington Peninsula, Yarra Valley, Rutherglen, Heathcote, Murray Darling/Swan Hill, Riverland, Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale, Coonawarra and Tasmania.
