IN 2011, GROWTH in the Australian wine category in Canada gained momentum. After declining by 5 per cent in 2009 and growing 1% in 2010, total Australian wine sales increased by 3% to 4.7 million cases (see Figure 1). The overall Canadian market increased by 3% to 42.1 million cases. Australian wine held an 11% marketshare to be the fourth-ranked supplier behind Canadian wines (27%), Italian wines (15%) and French wines (14%). Like the overall market, red wine dominates Australian wine sales with a 70% share, ahead of white wine (28%), sparkling wine (1.7%) and rose (0.3%). Sales of Australian red wine grew 2%, a lower rate than the growth in Australian white wine sales at 5%. In contrast, Australian sparkling and rose sales declined, by l%and 26%,respectively.
