Biological control of diseases of containerized plants.

This paper presents an overview of the various factors that are part of a successful integrated pest management programme of containerized plants with emphasis on the biological control aspects: food base requirements in potting mixes for sustained activity of biological control agents; colonization of potting mix by biopesticides for the successful control of damping off and root diseases; the use of fungicides and biological control agents; the use of best management practices for the inoculation of potting mixes with biological control agents; the impacts of introduced biological control agents and plant growth promoting bacteria in potting mixes on the growth of plants; the systemic disease control in biological control agent-fortified potting mixes; and the importance of repeat applications of biological control inoculum.
