Boddington Gold Mine is pushing to become one of the largest gold mines in Australia. To do this the mine in WAs South West region will move 1.2 million tonnes of earth a year. That means shifting about 300,000t of earth a day, which will require a big fleet of shovels operating simultaneously. However, the mine has some advantages that many of the state's other miners do not -access to plenty of cheap electricity. The mine is to be a major customer for Griffin Energy's new Bluewaters power station, due to come online in November. Until then it is drawing power fairly cheaply from the main WA power grid - at a lower cost to operations that need diesel to generate their power.
