A series of ionic liquid-supported carbodiimides was synthesized and applied in coupling reactions. The key features for the synthetic route included the click reaction of 3-azidobenzyl chloride to introduce the imidazolium moiety and the Staudinger reaction with different isothiocyanates to furnish novel carbodiimides, which showed good reactivity toward (thio)esterifications (76-99 %) and other acylations (79-93 %) and the resulting urea can be easily removed.
