Gold Fields earnings disappoint after impairment

South African bullion producer Gold Fields Ltd posted a slight quarterly rise in earnings as production rose 21% but its share price took a pounding as investors focused on a $US672 million impairment. Its shares were down 5.93% percent to R40.61 rand on February 13, even as the spot price of gold hovered near three-month highs close to $US1,290/oz. Normalised earnings for the quarter to end-December rose to 19c/share from 17c in the previous three months.
