Static VAR Compensators (SVCs) are the FACTS devices that are used for shunt compensation to control voltage, to improve transient stability and to control reactive power in power systems. Transmission capacity increases when SVC is incorporated in the line. Multilevel converters are emerging as a new branch of power converter options for high power applications. This converter gives the staircase voltage waveform with several levels of DC voltages. Multilevel converters synthesize several levels of voltage to achieve smoother and less distorted AC-to-DC, DC-to-AC, and DC-to-DC power conversions. In this paper, IGBT based seventeen level cascaded H-Bridged multilevel converter is designed and the total harmonic distortion with & without filters are examined. SVC modelling with a Cascaded H-Bridge Multilevel converter in place of a TCR branch is also presented with different topologies.
