LATENT Petroleum and Alcoa have joined forces to develop the Warro gas field, 200km north of Perth. The announcement came just 10 days after the Apache Energy production facility on Varanus Island exploded. If commercially viable the field could become a major supplier of domestic gas to industry and be the first commercial tight gas field in Western Australia. Tight gas is where sandstone reservoirs trap the gas and do not naturally allow it to flow to the surface. The Warro field is estimated to hold up to 5 trillion cubic feet (Tcf) of gas. If it is proved viable, gas liberated from the field would be shipped to Perth through the Dampier to Bunbury and Parmelia pipelines.
