One of my earliest memories is of a long road trip over the Rimutaka Hill to Cross Creek where Dad wanted to record the dismantling of the Rimutaka Incline. I would not have been much more than three years old at the time but do remember a hot and tiring walk up the Incline where we came across some men at work, probably dismantling the centre rail. They warned us that one was on the way down the Incline, and soon one clattered around a bend, passed us, and disappeared down the hill. I can still picture that Fell engine passing, and this must have been an impressive sight fora small boy!
