Implats Zimbabwe unit plans $690 million refinery

The Zimbabwean unit of the world's second largest platinum producer Impala Platinum Ltd will spend $US690 million to upgrade its base metals refinery, the company's chief executive said in August. Zimplats, which is 87% owned by Implats, inherited a base metals refinery built in the 1990s by mining giant BHP Billiton Ltd but never used it, saying it was outdated. Zimplats chief executive Alex Mhembere said the company wanted to construct a new refinery but pressure from President Robert Mugabe's government was forcing it to upgrade the old refinery, located 70km west of the capital Harare.
