Afro-optimism was very much in the air during Mining Indaba week in Cape Town as economists, investors and financiers spoke enthusiastically about the pace of economic growth in Africa over the last decade and the continued positive forecasts for the next 10 years. The reasons for this turnaround - from the Hopeless Continent to the Hopeful Continent as two covers of The Economist, published 10 years apart, would have it - are varied, with keynote speakers and delegates citing the end of conflict and famine, the spread of democracy and the commodities super-cycle as key to this unprecedented growth.
