In its latest bid to save money in the face of the ongoing funding crisis, the Canal & River Trust has announced the removal of all its public litter bins.Faced with a real-terms decline in the value of its Government funding grant (fixed at £50m a year for the next four years) as a result of high inflation, the Trust said that "We need to prioritise maintaining the core fabric of the waterways, including the thousands of locks, bridges, aqueducts and other historic structures that make up the canal network, so that we can continue to provide free access to our towpaths for millions of people and maintain the integrity of the infrastructure to keep communities safe." CRT said its admittedly unpopular decision would "save much needed money that will help pay for a long list of vital repairs," pointing out that many miles of canal where it didn't provide bins had still achieved the coveted Gren Flag Award status from the Keep Britain Tidy campaign.
