Cessnock goes hi-tech/A high energy coal technology and a government grant are set to benefit the Hunter Valley coal industry

Before the year is out Cessnock will be home to another coal technology demonstration plant, according to White Energy, the company behind the proposed facility. Welcoming a 4.35 million dollars Auslndustry Commercial Ready grant, ASX-listed White Energy said the grant would assist the development of the plant. The proposed plant will use a patented coal upgrading technology to produce a high energy, low emission coal briquette. Developed by White subsidiary Binderless Coal Briquetting in conjunction with the CSIRO, the technology converts high moisture, low value coal to a more marketable high energy product better suited to transportation and handling. White Energy managing director John Atkinson told Australia's Mining Monthly the presence of a similar coal technology plant and the opportunity for mutual business benefits made the Hunter Valley region the ideal spot for the new plant.
