The present invention provides an adaptable fixture for battery lid-to-can welding with a solid back portion 1 which clamps against the front fixture 2, along clamping surface 3. The fixture may additionally include a lower clamp 4 to hold the battery housing firmly in place. The fixture may also have adjustable height screws 5 as shown in Figure 1(a). The fixture can accommodate a variety of sizes by using easy to fabricate nesting offset drop-in fixtures 6 in Figure 1(b). Once fabricated, these nesting drop-in fixtures can be easily swapped to accommodate a known set of battery sizes at the welding station. A more completely flexible fixture is shown in Figure 1(c), where the front fixture 2 is replaced with an adaptable pin fixture. Here, a damp 7 fixes pins 8 once they are conformed to the battery shape. A corner block 9 could be added in a variety of ways to reliably hold pressure at the corner of the cell. The pins shown here have a square profile with a dual angle end 10. This allows conformation to the shape of the battery on both the long and short edge. The pins could also have a single edge profile, but they would require specific positioning depending on if they contacted the long or short edge. Alternatively, they could be round. This fixture allows complete flexibility to weld the lid-to-can without detailed prior knowledge of the dimensions.
