KOMATSU has released what it claims to be the world's first hybrid excavator. While very much aimed at the construction sector, the development of the electro-hydraulic digger could open up some interesting possibilities for the mining sector. Called the PC200-8 Hybrid, the 20-tonne excavator went on sale on June 1. It will not be offered in markets outside Japan until the first quarter of 2009. Komatsu claims its Hybrid System will deliver fuel savings of 25-40 percent.
