MANY Australian employers are not prepared for new safety laws due to come into effect within months, according to a Sydney-based safety and environmental compliance lawyer. Introduced in New South Wales last year and due to come into effect nationally in September, the new laws require employers to have in place a safety management system to prevent or minimise the risk of workplace injury.Beven Schwaiger, director of emsoft Australia, said the NSW guidelines clearly explained an employer's obligation to provide a comprehensive safety management system."This means systems for hazard identification and analysis, employee consultation, induction and awareness programs, incident tracking and management," he said.
