The technology, size and durability of the machines currently in use in the Pilbara region of WA frequently throw up impressive figures relating to cost, tonnages and sheer endurance. However, so much of the mining activity in the Pilbara is still heavily reliant on the most complex machine of all, the human body. Health promotion and the maintenance of good health has become a vital and integral part of the mining industry - not only because the conditions can be so hard on the human body. In an industry so desperately short on skilled and semi-skilled labour, the significance of the health of its workers has never been greater.
