Spurred on by limited opportunities at home, the push by Australian mining and service companies into southern Africa shows no signs of slowing. Countries such as South Africa, Tanzania, Zambia, Botswana and Mozambique are proving popular. Others, such as the Congo and Zimbabwe, remain mostly off limits due to their continued unrest and political uncertainty.Last year's 28 billion US dollars merger between BHP and Billiton marked the top end of modern Australian mining investment in southern Africa. Mid-tier companies such as Aquarius Platinum and Ticor are also investing heavily in the region, while smaller companies Dwyka Diamonds, Equinox Resources, Gallery Gold, Anvil Mining and Goldstream Mining are active.
