AUSTRALIAN contractor Worley has won a new services contract for Shell's Sparta ultra-deepwater field development in the US Gulf of Mexico, for which the final investment decision is now targeted later this year, reprising its role when the project was known as North Platte under Total-Energies' then-operatorship. Worley said it will provide the engineering, design, procurement support, construction and commissioning support for the Sparta front-end engineering and design work, detailed design and follow-on phases of the project. Sparta, located around 170 miles (272 kilometres) off the Louisiana coast, will be exploited via a lightweight semi-submersible floating production unit incorporating Worley's design that is being deployed on Shell's Whale and Vito projects - also in the US Gulf. Worley will deliver its Sparta services from its US offices in Houston, Texas, and Metairie, Louisiana, with support from its global integrated delivery team in India.
