AUSTRALIA has benefited immensely from more than three decades of intense mineral exploration using modern geochemical analytical techniques, applied to the surface and near surface. Nowadays discovery is getting harder. Yet there are still more fertile fields for exploration within and beneath the regolith. This is because the clues to hidden mineralisation are confounded by the long and complex processes, that go on in our uniquely deeply weathered terrain, that are characterised by extensive redistributed detritus. This complex evolutionary history involves reactive transport of mobile ions in low temperature fluids and complex resedimentation processes. Understanding these processes requires smart science.
