Seventeen-year-old Anglo-Belgian pilot Mack Rutherford has broken the world record for the youngest person to fly solo around the world when he landed back in Sofia, Bulgaria on August 24. Flying a Shark Aero Shark with the French departmental registration 59DZG, he set off from Bulgaria on March 23, 2022 and made 70 stops in 52 countries, crossing the equator twice. One of the last stops was at London Biggin Hill Airport on August 22 (pictured), following which he went on to Belgium, Slovakia and then Sofia. In completing his epic trip, Rutherford now holds four world records: youngest person to circumnavigate the world by aircraft solo, youngest person to circumnavigate the world by aircraft solo (male), youngest person to circumnavigate the world by microlight solo and youngest person to circumnavigate the world by microlight solo (male). Rutherford claimed the first two records from Travis Ludlow, who completed a similar journey in 2021 aged 18 years and 150 days.
