US DEVELOPER Archer Aviation flew its initial electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, the Maker, in California on December 16,2021. The demonstrator's flight was a brief hover involving the check-out of the flight control system and software. Testing this year will start with the hover envelope, before "transition envelope expansion, ensuring the Maker is able to move from hover to forward flight," according to the Palo Alto-based company.
