The relation between the interfacial tension atthe steel/slag interface and the sulphur transport through thephase boundary has been invest-ed. The experiments have beencarried out at 1550 deg C. The steel/slag system consisted ofArmco iron in combination with a synthetic slag containing 40percent CaO, 40 percent SiO_2 and 20 percent Al_2O_3. Thecontrolled change of the interfacial tension was performed byadditional alloying of the surface active element silicon andsurface inactive molybdenum. The different influences of silicon and molybdenum oninterfacial tension are directly reflected by the sulphurtransport rate. Higher inter-facial tensions generally cause alower sulphur transport rate. A linear relationship was onlyobtained in presence of silicon.
