A sudden irruption of a beech-leaf gall Mikiola fagi (Hartig) was observed in 2021 in a Buckinghamshire woodland where it had never been known in the past. An investigation was made of its past and current distribution. A sample of galls was collectedfor a study of mortality and possible causes. Continuing surveys in 2022 revealed the presence of the gall in most nearby woodlands, where it had similarly never been recorded before, although generally at very low frequency. The reasons for the suddenappearance of the gall in the area and the major irruption in one woodland are still unclear and the population dynamics of this and the other British beech-leaf gall Hartigiola annulipes (Hartig) require more investigation.
