Historically, the regulation of health professionals was undertaken by states and territories, without a consistent approach across Australia. From 1 July 2010, however, health regulation became a national function in Australia. Implementing the National Registration and Accreditation Scheme (NRAS) has meant significant upheaval and no part of Australia's health system has been left untouched. This new National Scheme marks the first time one country has regulated the practice of 10 health professions - made up of more than 530,000 health practitioners - using a single National Law, to protect the public and facilitate access to health services.While many features of the National Scheme are new and different, the core focus of practitioner regulation on patient and public safety remains unchanged.
