When a conveyor idler fails, it can cause a host of other problems with the conveyor system. Changing faulty idlers can often be a time-consuming and labour-intensive process, not to mention the cost of lost production because the belt has to be shut down. Imagine the benefits if the idlers can last for years - almost 40 in some cases. A number of vintage rollers were uncovered recently at a dry screening plant at the Mt Whaleback iron ore mine at Newman, Western Australia. These included a trough roller on an M13 conveyor dating back to 1970 and a 1981 return roller. Queensland-based Sandvik representative David Walton said he often came across old rollers while visiting customers.
