Watch for a range of 'primer' crops to start making their mark in difficult cropping country. Designed to open up hostile subsoils these pasture plants are offering at least some of the advantages of lucerne and may even prove a better 'fit' with current cropping systems. Mark Peoples from CSIRO Plant Industry describes a primer crop as one that has the ability to modify the area around their root zone to open the way for following crops. They might do this by changing the pH in the immediate area of their roots or by their roots pushing through sodic, saline or impervious subsoils and opening a pathway for the roots of following crops.
