AVIATOR AIRPORT Alliance, which provides services at 15 airports across Scandinavia and the Nordic countries, is planning to introduce more sustainable airport ground services equipment (GSE) in response to increased demand for such devices. Aviator currently has 1,297 GSE units in operation - 70% of which are in Sweden and Norway - not counting dollies and trollies. The company's business improvement director Magnus Soederberg explained the thinking behind the plans: "Electrical ground handling machinery saves on fuel costs and lowers our environmental impact. "For example, [the] Kalmar Motor TBL190 electric pushback/towing tractor that will reach us in 2022, will allow us to save approximately 30,000 litres of diesel, which corresponds to savings of around 80,000kg of CO2. Such GSE allows us to operate equipment in closed gate areas with zero-emissions, no small particle pollution and with equipment noise practically eliminated. We will also save a lot in service and maintenance as the newer machines do not require servicing as frequently."
