With outside temperatures rising above 30°C in many parts of Canada, heat warnings have been issued and reports have come in that indicate heat stress in greenhouse vegetables.Signs include severe tomato fruit splitting and blotchy ripening, cucumbers not setting new flowers and fruit abortion, pepper fruits showing wavy skin, and strawberry flower and fruit size becoming smaller.Inside greenhouses, air temperatures have been recorded at around 36 to 38°C. The temperature of the skin on red-coloured tomato fruits have measured at 41.2°C.
