My journey into Mesembs was an unexpected consequence of the Covid lockdown. I am a plantsman at heart, always looking and trying new plants particularly from seed. If you wander around my garden, you will always find some unusual flowers growing as well as vegetable plots with 25 lb beetroots, 12 lb onions and other attempts at monster vegetables. I have always dreamed of having a National Collection as part of the Plant Heritage scheme. Lockdown gave me the time to look at their lists of 1000’s ofsuggested genera. My long list became a short list until I landed on Cheiridopsis. They seemed an ideal type of plant to fill my large greenhouse in the winter months. The fact that they were not as popular as other mesembs only made them more attractive to me.
