It's the second-largest animal on Earth, but themysterious fin whale has long been overlooked by everyone from scientists to photographers, says Philip Hoare. Until now...Fin whales are in the news at last - and not just because of the photographs by Doug Perrine that we publish here, probably the best ever taken of this enormous yet elusive species underwater. The breathtaking pictures are from the azure-blue Pelagos Sanctuary for Mediterranean Marine Mammals, which spans offshore waters belonging to Italy, France and Monaco. Sizeable numbers of fin whales feed here every summer, and scientists at Milan's Tethys Research Institute are finally gaining exciting new insights into their behaviour and seasonal movements.
