In the June issue of Australian Dairy Foods this column noted that Big Sky Dairy, a 3,300-cow property in Otago on the South Island, was looking for a buyer. In line withdrawing foreign interest in the New Zealand dairy industry, its new owner may come from China. Foreign investment in the New Zealand farm industry is an ongoing phenomenon. Between 1 July 2005 and 1 July 2010, the Overseas Investment Office (OIO) has approved 235 applications for foreign investment in agricultural land - assumed to be grassland for dairying - covering an area of more than 150,000 hectares.
