The late arriving summer eventually brought a pleasant second half for the whole of New Zealand to enjoy. However, in February Northland had the lowest rainfall for that month in 50 years, which caused severe drought and loss of farm production. The change in weather might have contributed to the calm that suddenly fell over the furore that had dominated public debate throughout the early summer, as described in my column last issue.
