Positive signs amid ongoing challenges

Dairy Australia's recently released Australian Dairy Industry In Focus 2012 highlighted strong growth in milk production and some positive trends in dairy product consumption in 2011/12. In milk equivalent terms, estimated total per capita consumptionof milk, cheese, butter/blends and yogurt remained at around 300 litres per person. This is very high as compared to available global data. Per capita consumption of drinking milk in 2011/12 was about 106 litres. This preliminary estimate points to twoconsecutive years of reasonable growth in drinking milk consumption. This is attributable to the steady increase in the country's population and the continued expansion of'coffee culture' in Australia.
