This proceedings presents a presidential address, focusing on the role of plant pathology on world agrarian activities relating to food and fibre production, discussing biosecurity and integrated disease management; the 2005 Daniel McAlpine Memorial Lecture to commemorate his outstanding contribution to plant pathology; and 7 keynote addresses, covering some topics, including the (i) influence of the Australia's Chief Plant Protection Officer on plant pathology, (ii) potential impact of climate change on plant-pathogen interactions, (iii) use of molecular diagnostics to investigate the epidemiology of potato diseases, (iv) population dynamics and dispersal of Leptosphaeria maculans (blackleg of canola [rape]), (v) new approaches for studying bacterial diseases of plants, and (vi) traditional and novel strategies for geminivirus management in Brazil..
