Many years ago (and all I'm going to admit to is that it was more than 30) I spent some months travelling around the outback in Australia. One night the bus broke down and we were left stranded some distance from Alice Springs. It was a clear, still night and, as we waited in the scrub by the side of the road for assistance, I gazed up in awe at the Milky Way as it spiralled across the arc of the sky, with wave upon wave of stars and coloured cloud curling down to the horizon in both directions. It was a sight I've never forgotten.
