This was tour first trip to Western Australia and it proved to be quite a challenging one. I was surprised to learn just how big Australia is and I still wonder if you can truly appreciate its vastness without undertaking the long drive from Sydney. In planning for this rather daunting trip we had no real idea where to go but we'd read a great deal about the various gold producing locations in the west so we simply gathered all the information we could. We found that the NSW State Library, a part of the Mitchell Library, had copies of all four volumes of 'Gold & Ghosts' and better still, they allow you to photocopy them. I have seen individual volumes of this classic series selling for more than S500 but we spent a day at the library researching and copying the relevant sections and got everything we wanted for less than 30 dollars!
